Team Liquid drops purp0 ahead of Champions Shanghai, hands GSR his Tier 1 shot

Team Liquid has made the surprise decision to bench Seymon "purp0" Borchev and promote Academy duelist Ognjen "GSR" Bondžić for VALORANT Champions 2026. The swap, confirmed Sept. 9 via Team Liquid's official X account, thrusts a fledgling 18-year-old with no Tier 1 experience into the spotlight for the year's most prestigious VALORANT event. Fans took to X to express their shock at what is seen as a huge gamble.

With Champions Shanghai just two weeks away, GSR has hardly any time to get into rhythm with the starting lineup before the competition begins. Purp0, on the other hand, had been a permanent fixture in the roster since signing at the start of the 2026 season. The organization has not publicly detailed the reasons behind the switch, but the move clearly demonstrates their faith in the Serbian teenager, who may yet turn out to be a secret weapon.

Who is GSR?

Some of you will be aware of Team Liquid’s young gun, but for others his name is probably a new one. Ognjen "GSR" Bondžić joined Team Liquid Academy at the start of 2025. In the VCL NORTH//EAST circuit, he built a reputation as a reliable duelist across two full seasons, helping the Academy side win the VCL 2025 NORTH//EAST Stage 1 title and reach the grand final of Stage 3, where they fell to Enterprise Esports.

His 2026 Academy campaign was hit and miss. The team posted two runner-up finishes, both against Enterprise Esports in Stage 1 and Stage 2, but didn't lift a single title across the year. Liquid’s coaching staff, though, have clearly seen something in GSR’s performances that suggest he may be able to spring a few surprises in China.

What the move means for Liquid at Champions Shanghai

Team Liquid starts their Champions Shanghai campaign against Paper Rex in Group C. It's hardly the ideal opening draw; Paper Rex are one of the most volatile and dangerous teams in the world when firing. The game could be the making of GSR or it could see his team’s decision to gamble on him backfire.

Liquid are betting on the former outcome. Their confidence in GSR reportedly runs so deep that they’re prepared to sideline one of their most stable players of 2026. For purp0 himself, the situation can’t be easy. Having joined Liquid, he surely would have had competitions like Champions Shanghai in his eyeline. To now be benched on the eve of such a big tournament despite enjoying a solid season has to hurt.

Ultimately, it’s an audacious call from his team. Most organizations sit on what they know at Champions and play it safe; Team Liquid has flipped the script, almost daring their opponents to react and respond.

Champions Shanghai group-stage play gets underway later in September, giving GSR a narrow window to prove the promotion was the right call at the right time.
