Spirit City: Lofi Sessions opens the doors to its Magical Library expansion

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions has just become an even more dangerous proposition for anybody who would happily spend an entire afternoon hiding from the real world in a room full of books.

Mooncube Games has released the new Magical Library expansion for its hugely popular cozy productivity game today, August 24, bringing with it a new environment packed with bookshelves, fireplaces, magical artifacts and another collection of Spirits to discover.

The new DLC follows the previous Enchanted Garden expansion and takes Spirit City’s mixture of lofi music, gentle productivity tools and digital comfort somewhere considerably more Hogwarts-adjacent.

Spirit City Magical Library adds 13 new Spirits

The centrepiece is the Magical Library itself, which can be customised into everything from a dark academia study to a magical academy or plant-filled witch’s hideaway.

As with the rest of Spirit City, however, the idea isn’t really to give you another game demanding your full attention. It’s designed as somewhere pleasant to exist while you’re studying, working or attempting to convince yourself that today’s to-do list is actually going to get finished.

New activities fit the fantasy setting, including studying elemental magic, practising spells with a wand and brewing potions in a cauldron. Players can also simply find somewhere comfortable beside the fireplace and get on with whatever they are supposed to be doing in the real world.

There are 13 new Spirits to discover, including dragons, owls and helpful mice, alongside new versions of some existing favourites.

Naturally, there’s also a sizeable collection of new cosmetic items. Academy uniforms, scholarly accessories and magical outfits have been added, while the library itself can be extensively redecorated.

Spirit City: Lofi Sessions originally launched on Steam in April 2024 as something halfway between a game and a productivity app. Players create an avatar, collect Spirits and decorate their surroundings while using built-in tools including timers, task lists, habit tracking and journaling, all accompanied by lofi music and ambient soundscapes.

It has subsequently expanded into several additional environments, including a cozy kitchen, train journey and the recently released Enchanted Garden.

Magical Library continues that idea of turning Spirit City into a collection of different spaces you can disappear into depending on what kind of mood you’re in.

And yes, sitting beside a virtual fireplace studying imaginary spellbooks while supposedly doing actual work sounds suspiciously like exactly the sort of productivity technique that would result in us getting absolutely nothing done.
