1) 2007 New England Patriots

New England went 16 and 0 in the regular season, scored a then-record 589 points, and reached Super Bowl XLII at 18 and 0. 2) 1998 Minnesota Vikings

Best for: Explosive balance on both sides of the ball

Minnesota finished 15 and 1 and set an NFL scoring record with 556 points. Randall Cunningham, Randy Moss, Cris Carter, and Robert Smith powered the offense, while the defense finished sixth in points allowed. Gary Anderson’s missed field goal gave Atlanta life in the NFC Championship Game, but the Vikings still had chances before losing 30 to 27 in overtime.

3) 2013 Denver Broncos

Best for: Record-setting offense

Denver scored 606 points, and Peyton Manning set single-season records with 5,477 passing yards and 55 touchdowns. The Broncos reached Super Bowl XLVIII, where Seattle’s defense and special teams controlled a 43 to 8 rout. The final game was poor, but the full season remains one of the greatest offensive campaigns ever.

4) 2001 St Louis Rams

Best for: Complete roster talent

The Greatest Show on Turf went 14 and 2, led the league in scoring, and also fielded a top-10 scoring defense. Kurt Warner won MVP, Marshall Faulk supplied 2,147 yards from scrimmage, and Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt stretched every coverage. New England disrupted the timing offense and won Super Bowl XXXVI on Adam Vinatieri’s final kick.

5) 1990 Buffalo Bills

Best for: The strongest of Buffalo’s four consecutive AFC champions

Buffalo went 13 and 3, scored 428 points, and entered Super Bowl XXV after decisive playoff wins over Miami and the Los Angeles Raiders. The Giants shortened the game, controlled possession, and survived Scott Norwood’s 47-yard attempt wide right. Buffalo returned to the next three Super Bowls, but the 1990 team had the best regular-season profile of the four.

6) 1984 Miami Dolphins

Best for: Historic passing in its era

Dan Marino threw for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns, numbers that were far beyond the league’s normal passing production in 1984. Miami went 14 and 2 and scored 513 points. San Francisco controlled Super Bowl XIX and won 38 to 16, leaving Marino without another appearance in the game.

7) 2018 Kansas City Chiefs

Best for: The beginning of the Mahomes era

Patrick Mahomes threw 50 touchdowns and won MVP in his first full season as a starter. Kansas City went 12 and 4, scored 565 points, and hosted the AFC Championship Game. New England won 37 to 31 in overtime after a late offsides penalty erased a Chiefs interception that would have ended the game.
