Join Now!Greetings, DayOne community. Another Saturday has rolled around and hopefully you’ll be able to chill out and relax with some great video games. Let’s see what the team have been getting up to this week, and then we’d love for you to vote in our poll at the bottom of this article. We want to know – what are you playing this weekend?
Jon (Sikamikanico):
“A very busy week for me, as I’ve been working on three reviews simultaneously, while continuing to support our quest for ongoing worthwhile gaming news content! Phew!
First up is Marvel’s Wolverine from Insomniac Games. This one is the latest victim of online discourse that sees gamers take certain design decisions and make them seem far worse than they actually are. In truth, Wolverine is a fun, gory adventure in the style of a classic hack-n-slash brawler, with Insomniac’s typically lavish style and story telling on top. I certainly have some criticisms, namely that it feels too long and drawn out, and yes, it holds your hands a little too often. It’s still a perfectly fun time though!
Elsewhere I reviewed a new puzzle game from Raw Fury and Exnilo Studio – ‘Rivage’. In this one, players are trapped in a time loop like Groundhog Day, as they work to find out what happened to their crew on a Space-station orbiting a strange planet. While it’s an interesting premise, this one was too convoluted for it’s own good, and was more frustrating than fun.
Lastly, I’ve been working on…oh -I can’t talk about that one just yet. Maybe next week?”
Jesse (DonCabesa):
“I got to play Wo Long 2: Wings of Ember at Gamescom and in a take-home demo. The sequel to a solid but flawed character action game moves things into more of a Dynasty Warriors setup. Don’t worry, it’s still character action first and foremost, the main difference now is the map layout and summons. Instead of a fairly linear map you now have a set of large maps full of tasks to complete, at least in this demo. The 6+ hours of content available were of a distinctly higher quality than I remember Team Ninja hitting with the first game. While my Gamescom demo looked and ran horribly, this Alpha demo was gorgeous and ran great on my home system. It will be interesting to see how things shape up before its release next March into Xbox Game Pass, on PS5, and PC.
The other game I have played is CONTROL Resonant. I liked but did not love the original CONTROL. The vibes and some of the powers were off the chart cool. Storywise though, it fell flat. Resonant fixes that with an excellent, satisfying narrative that compliments its move to becoming a Devil May Cry-like. Dylan Faden takes over as the main character, after being a nothing of a final ‘enemy’ in the first one. His sister Jesse, star of the first title, has gone missing and he’s doing everything he can to find her while combating enemies on multiple fronts. It’s a weird, wacky, great game that has a few flaws like a slow start and obfuscated set of systems. Once you figure it out though? Few things can compare.”
Aarsal (SoulBlazerz):
“I return! If you’re curious what I’ve been playing over the past few weeks, check out my piece on playing WoW Forever with a controller and some of my other Gamescom stuff. But otherwise, I’ve dabbled with some new Game Pass games like Runescape: Dragonwilds, and of course I’m still chugging along in Wuthering Waves. But what I’ve really been playing plenty of this week is Control Resonant!
I’m sure you’ve read Jesse’s review already, but there’s so much I could say about this game. I already knew I was going to like it after playing it back in June, but I’ve started to count down the hours in the day until I can get back home to continue Dylan’s journey. While the game does start a little too slowly (even though they throw so many movement abilities at you right away), I’ve been enjoying the map design and exploration a fair bit. Especially as I beat more bosses and unlock more combat options.
Heck, just this morning I swapped builds from the long-range whip-like secondary to the giant hammer, and I don’t think smashing a giant floating blue ball to the ground is ever going to get tiring. Looking at the talent trees, there’s still a fair bit more to unlock combat-wise too, which is exciting. I’m only 10 or so hours in, but already I know this one is going to make my top list at the end of the year.”
Genghis (SolidusKraken):
“Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter occupied the last two weeks of my gaming time, completely setting me back on my gamescom coverage (which I must get to!).
As I wrote in my review, Trails 2nd is a bit polarising in that it’s a straight-shot conflict that’s taken the centre stage as opposed to the first game’s “nonbiri” pacing and worldbuilding. Normally, a lot of games falter here and lose my interest, but Nihon Falcom not only managed to dissuade me from doomscrolling a booru but kept me engaged throughout the game’s runtime—and notably the latter half of the game where the stakes really come together to be this threatening menace of sorts that I wish I could describe without spoiling.
The game is out now, but if you haven’t played the first Trails in the Sky, you must do so. This duology has become some of my favourite JRPGs of all time.”
