Back to level 60, with a few new tricks Azeroth from the sofa What happens after launch dayWorld of Warcraft: Forever goes live on PC on November 4, and Blizzard is launching it with official Gamepad (Alpha) controller support, the new Skyborne race and a level 60 Azeroth that is meant to stay that way.
Announced at BlizzCon 2026 in September and built by the WoW Classic team, Forever is the project fans spent years calling “Classic Plus”: a version of the 2004 game with new zones, quests and systems layered on top. It comes included with an active World of Warcraft subscription, so existing players will not pay extra to log in.

Forever returns players to the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, but Screen Rant’s breakdown of the launch content shows how much Blizzard has added to the old map. The headline features at launch:
- The Skyborne, a race of sky elves from the floating Zephras Isle who can join the Alliance or the Horde
- Three new zones: Zephras Isle, Riverglades in the Eastern Kingdoms and the previously off-limits slopes of Mount Hyjal
- More than 1,000 new quests, nine new dungeons, two new raids and a new battleground
- Fresh race and class combinations, such as the Forsaken Paladin
- Optional visual upgrades to lighting and water, plus a toggle between SD and HD character models
There is a catch for anyone eyeing those elves: the Skyborne are locked behind paid bundles. The Skyborne Heroic Pack costs $29.99, the Skyborne Epic Pack $59.99 and the Warcraft Forever Collection, which throws in Warcraft III: Reforged, $79.99.
Buyers of the two pricier editions got into the beta that ran from September 17 to October 21, and every edition has included early name reservation since October 27. Forever uses first and last names, which should soften the scramble a little.

The bigger surprise is the controller. In a hands-on piece for Xbox Wire, editor Mike Nelson explains that Gamepad (Alpha) is switched on with a single checkbox in the Options menu, after which the on-screen prompts change to match your pad. Triggers and bumpers swap between sets of abilities mapped to the face buttons, and holding the right stick opens a ping wheel with Attack, Warning, On My Way and Assist commands.
“I haven’t found anything that I can’t access through just the controller, and that’s a good thing for this feature’s future support,” Nelson writes. He also got it running on an ROG Xbox Ally through Battle.net, though he notes handheld play is not officially supported yet and chatting still works best with a keyboard close by.

Blizzard first confirmed the feature at BlizzCon. Speaking to Screen Rant, associate game director Paul Kubit said: “Official out-of-the-box support is something we’re super excited to add in Forever.” He added that the team will pay close attention to how players take to it, without ruling out the retail game.
What happens after launch day
Unlike Classic, Forever will not march through old expansions. Blizzard plans to keep the cap at 60 and grow the world with new quests, zones, dungeons and raids instead, an approach that producer Clayton Stone told Screen Rant grew out of the experiments in Season of Discovery. “We knew we could do a permanent version of that,” Stone said.
That leaves the open questions for after November 4: how fast those updates arrive, and whether a controller ever reaches retail World of Warcraft. For now, Kubit’s answer on retail is “never say never”, which in Blizzard terms is practically a roadmap.
